My friend, Greg, emailed me a couple of weeks ago to tell me about this great musical group he had just discovered, The Future of Forestry (www.futureofforestry.com or www.myspace.com/futureofforestry).  He stumbled on these guys while browsing through the new releases on iTunes.  They were labeled as Rock/Pop but after checking out their tour schedule, he realized that all their gigs were in churches.

There are some people who think that “Christians” should not be in mainstream entertainment.  If you’re a regular reader of my blog, you know we don’t agree with that philosophy.  The truth is that most Christ-followers are not involved in a “professional ministry.”  We do every day, normal jobs but that doesn’t diminish the importance of what each of us do.  Paul wrote “Whatever you do, do it with heart, as to Christ and not to men.”  (Colossians 3:22)

If God’s purposes in this world are to be done, we need a society that has structure – that includes all the everyday activities that each of us do.   Whether we know it or not, what each of us does in our ordinary lives does carry out God’s good purposes.  As long as what we do is not unethical or outright wrong, when we do our jobs well, we are serving Christ.

So, like The Future of Forestry or The Spencers or YOU, we should view our daily work – whatever it is – as an extension of God’s work in the world.  There’s no better place to be than right where God has placed us – using our talents and gifts to the best of our abilities – whether that’s in a “ministry” or in our everyday, ordinary lives.
