Regardless of your personal religious beliefs, Easter is a celebration of life. For many, it’s the “official” arrival of spring (and the arrival of pollen!). The “bunny” of Easter comes from a pagan symbol signifying fertility and life. But for those of us who are Christ-followers, today is a celebration of the resurrection of Jesus after being put to death for the wrongs of humanity. Many argue that this is not the “actual” day, historically speaking. That doesn’t really matter as it’s more of a celebration of what the resurrection means to those of faith.
The story of Jesus has been told in art, music, and in words. He was called the Son of God, the Lord of Lord, the Messiah. He called himself the Son of Man and the Good Shepherd. Jesus was – and still is – a person of controversary.
Living of life of simplicity and teaching his followers how to live a life of faith, he predicted his death as a fulfillment of Old Testament prophecy. After suffering the most vicious and brutual of deaths, Jesus proclaimed “It is finished,” signifying that his work for the salvation of mankind was complete – the sacrifice of his life for others in order to bring us back into a relationship with God.
The death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ is the foundation for the Christian faith. Today we remember the significance of what that means in the way we live our lives.
